Dr Luke Postlethwaite is a leading authority on the history of Berlin cinema. His research explores the manner in which the city’s past and present have been shaped by cinematic representations of Berlin’s urban space, its industry and its inhabitants.
This blog is an evolving expansion of his PhD thesis entitled ‘Beyond the Baustelle: Redefining Berlin’s Cinematic Brand as that of a Global Media City’. Through a combination of essays, reviews and anecdotes it looks to collate and explore Berlin through the lens of cinema, in order to expose the multiple, and often contradictory, layers which provide the foundation to this modern- day world metropolis’s identity.
