Berlin has been through many different guises in the 125+ years since it started to develop from a provincial backwater into a thriving world metropolis – a site of modernist experimentation, a hotbed for political extremism, and a mecca for hedonistic millennials to name just a few.
Throughout all of this, the changing and evolving city has fascinated filmmakers. As a result cinema is one of the few mediums which can give a glimpse into both Berlin’s tumultuous past and trendsetting present.
